When it comes to weight many parents seem to downplay the risks this has on their child’s general health and well being.. Some parents dismiss this as puppy fat, something they’ll outgrow. They are deluding themselves. There is no such thing as puppy fat. The child is overweight. Bottom line.

A quarter of all school aged children are overweight or obese. That really is scary.

The problems that come along with having a child who is overweight are very real and they can be extremely dangerous.

Being obese brings with it a greatly increased risk of getting diabetes. This disease has serious health consequences. Also, it has been seen that about seventy percent of those who are in the childhood obesity range will become obese adult.

And overweight or obese children are more likely to be victims of bullying.

So, what can you do to help your child?

Whilst you cannot solve the nation’s childhood obesity problem, you can help your own child to be at a healthy weight

It is said that kids sit watching the television, or playing on their computer for an average of 3 to 4 hours EVERY day.

However the recommended amount is no more than two hours.

Your child is obviously not getting enough movement into their day if they are spending hours at a screen.

Switch off the television or computer and play with your child. If they’re older encourage them to try out different sports until they find something they enjoy.

A key element in the fight against childhood obesity is to set a good example to your child. If all you want to do is eat junk food and sit around watching the television then it is likely that this sort of behavior is what your children will do.

Set a good example for your child and get active and adopt a healthy diet. You must stop serving up junk food. The majority of the meals you and your children eat should be packed with nutritional benefits. Cooking does not have to be a chore. Find pleasure in creating deliciously tasty meals.

And no, you don’t have to be tied to the kitchen for hours. And always try to sit down together to eat the meals. It provides a great opportunity to chat about the day’s events in a relaxed manner.

And become more active. Be adventureous, try out lots of different activities until you find one that you can stick to long term.

Following a healthy lifestyle is essential if you don’t want your child adding to the long list of overweight children.

It can never be too soon to start. Far better to develop good habits right from the start than re-educating later on.

And be a good role model in all aspects of your child’s development. It can be something as simple as always washing hands thoroughly after every visit to the bathroom. That should be an important element in potty training.
