Caution First: Selecting the Ideal Baby Crib Bedding

Anyone who doesn’t have their whole nursery completely planned out will likely be frustrated (and possibly terrified!) by the massive selection of nursery decor items that are available. Animal designs come in everything from a caterpillar crib set to safari themes. So what about angels? That shouldn’t have too many choices, right? Right - only a hundred or so! And if you want nursery rhymes or cartoon characters, put aside a couple of weeks just to browse!

Whether it’s boy baby bedding or baby girl, it can be really hard to stick to a budget, because everything is irresistibly adorable. But it’s important to realize that your baby won’t know the difference between a $100 bedding set and a $5000 set. Buy something cute, but don’t hurt your finances in the process. So here are a few suggestions for things your baby will need:

- Many people can’t imagine a crib without bumper pads, but recent controversy indicates they may not be such a good idea. Bumper pads are designed to prevent your baby’s head from bumping up against the crib’s railings, but they also pose a potential suffocation risk. To be safe, it’s best to just keep bumpers out of the crib altogether, or at least until your baby reaches birthday number one. If you decide to keep them in anyway, make sure the ties are on the outside of the crib and very securely tied.

- Crib sheets consist of just a fitted sheet. There is no flat sheet and no pillowcase, because young babies really don’t need them. Not all crib sheets fit all mattresses, and the wrong sized sheet can pop off the mattress and cause safety risks. White sheets are a definite no - babies are messy and your white sheets won’t stay white for long. A waterproof mattress cover is a good idea, too.

- Loose blankets are a safety hazard for babies under one, so stick to sleep sacks or warm pajamas instead. There is one other serious safety hazard you should be aware of: stuffed animals and pillows.

When you’re looking at baby bedding, first make sure it’s safe. With so many options available, you can still find something adorable.
